Freelance Technicians Wanted: The Boardwalk is hiring!

The Boardwalk is an events venue in Glasgow’s Merchant City, run by Impact Arts. We are looking to expand our pool of freelance technicians, particularly those who can support with both lighting and sound. If you’re a technician, we want to hear from you!

Role and responsibilities

Assist/tech all production and conference events held at The Boardwalk and provide a safe, tidy, and welcoming working environment within the technical/theatre area

Providing technical facilities for events throughout The Boardwalk i.e. the theatre, black studio, foyer area, rehearsal rooms, etc.

Communicating with incoming companies, ensuring that their technical, stage, and staffing requirements are met to as high a professional standard as possible

Welcoming bookings to The Boardwalk, assisting with get-ins, technical duties including operating lighting & sound, or AV when required, and assisting with get-outs

Ensuring companies are aware of: fire exits and fire procedures, Health & Safety (first-aid facilities, safe working practices etc.)

Ensuring production risk assessments are completed by the visiting company & The Boardwalk

Evaluating the competency of visiting company staff in their use of rigging, electrical equipment, etc.

Risk assessing their methods of erecting set items and fixing to bars and ensuring that the equipment used is within the Health & Safety and LOLER regulations.

Where deemed necessary the technician has the authority to refuse the use of any equipment, whether stage or electrical, that appears faulty or unfit for use.

Attending meetings with the production and/or core staff to: provide reasonable warning of potential overtime costs which must be approved by the Events Manager; discuss forthcoming events and evaluate past events; and discuss ideas to improve the efficiency and working environment of the building

Organising and operating a schedule of regular maintenance and record keeping for all equipment, both technical and stage, in accordance with the current Health & Safety regulations, notifying the Events Manager of faulty or damaged equipment

Ensuring that all fire exits are unlocked and fire escapes are clear at all times and ensuring that fire alarms within the theatre are isolated when necessary

The Technician is designated Fire Officer for the Production Department and must observe the set-down fire procedures

Responsibility for locking up the theatre and backstage areas at the end of the working day

Shifts are available immediately and are offered on a Self-employed (£17p/h) or PAYE (£15.35p/h) basis. Shifts are for a minimum of 4 hours and will not exceed the working time directive.
